The next 9 years will be a crucial turning point for Indonesia in the sector of renewable energy, with over 8,750 MW, or 25 percent of the total current power capacity being contributed by geothermal, hydropower, and “bioenergy” plants.

The government is seeking investments up of up to Rp. 403 trillion over the next 5 years in an attempt to reduce the dependence on depleting fossil-based fuel reserves.

"As a nation keen to achieve self-sufficiency in energy, we must not rely on fossil fuels. The fact now is that Indonesia has become a net importer of oils, while in due course of time, fossil fuel reserves will become exhausted,” remarked Jokowi, noting that the country has 40 percent of the world’s geothermal potential that has yet to be fully exploited.

Understanding Indonesia’s immense opportunity to convert into renewable energy, the government plans on acting aggressively to attract investors, some of which that have already expressed interest include Japan, Netherlands and the United Kingdom.

The Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Sudirman had declared a focus for the government to push Indonesia’s current renewable energy use of 5-6 percent up to a target of 19 percent by the year 2019.

Included within the increased budgetary allocations for this sector in the coming years, will be the creation of energy forests and gardens as well as several government buildings being equipped with solar panels in an effort to ramp up the use of new and renewable energy methods.

“We should not think pragmatically anymore. We should not think only for the short term. New and renewable energy sources are very important to maintain our energy sustainability so that we do not depend solely on fossil-based energy sources,” said Sudirman.

By 2025, the minister expects that renewable energy will reach 25 percent of our nation’s total energy use, beginning with a target investment value of Rp. 4 quadrillion (US$ 304 billion) by 2020.

Held on February 11-12 in Nusa Dua, Bali, Indonesia, the Bali Clean Energy Forum hosted a gathering to discuss the framework and actions towards bridging technological gaps to becoming a catalyst of clean energy development at the national, regional and global level. The Bali Clean Energy Forum 2016 was inaugurated by President Joko Widodo, and was co-organized by the Ministry of Energy Mineral Resources of Indonesia (MEMR) and the International Energy Agency (IEA). With the aim of achieving energy sustainability and prosperity for all, the forum focused on both national and global solutions.

With the theme of ‘Bridging the Gap to Promoting Global Partnership’, the forum intended to explore how global partnerships can bridge gaps between countries’ and regions’ clean energy deployment pathways. By bringing together stakeholders and citizens from across the globe, attendees had the opportunity to be involved in strengthening partnerships in the development of clean energy.

Speaking on behalf of large national corporations that are willing to support the government’s plan to increase the use of clean energy by the year 2025, Yoke Kee Ang, the Executive Director of PT.
